Reaching New Heights – Hill Walking Programme

Reaching New Heights is a hillwalking course that Kilkenny Recreation & Sports Partnership held in partnership with Mountaineering Ireland. 12 Women from around Kilkenny Participated on this programme. Participants attended 4 locations over a 4-week period, Castlemorris Woods on the 27th of July, Blackstairs Mt on the 3rd of August, Brandon Hill on the 10th of August & Mt Leinster on the 17th of August.

Rock Up & Climb – Rock Climbing Taster Session

Rock up and climb is a Rock-Climbing programme that Kilkenny Recreation & Sports Partnership held in partnership with Mountaineering Ireland. This programme was suitable for beginners and was 2.5 hours introductory to rock climbing. The course was delivered by a qualified leader. The leader guided participants through the techniques and the use of the ropes throughout the introduction session to Rock Climbing. This was held over 2 days on Monday 14th & Tuesday 15th August, a Total of 12 Teen girls & 12 Women participated in the session over the 2 days.

HER Outdoors Programme in Castlecomer Discovery Park

KRSP held a 4-week Outdoor Adventure Programme for teenage girls in Castlecomer Discovery Park which commenced on Tuesday 1st of August & Wednesday 2nd of August 2023. The aim of HEROutdoors Week is to get more women and girls active in the outdoors! This was our third year running the programme and it was very successful with the girls trying their hand at archery, axe throwing, raft building, zip-lining, team building activities and more! This year we had 30 teen girls who participated in the 4-week programme, they were split into 2 groups:

Group 1 – Tuesday August 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd. (6:30 – 8:30PM)

Group 2 – Wednesday August 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd. (6:30 – 8:30PM)

This was a fun filled programme where the girls had the opportunity to make new friends and be adventurous in the outdoors.

Get Her Kayaking

KRSP held a 2-day kayaking and canoe skills course, run in conjunction with KACC members and instructors. The Course was held on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th August from 10.00 to 4pm, based at KACC premises on Canal Walk. 12 Teen girls participated in the Course. Participants were introduced to a mix of paddle sports including Kayaking, Canoeing and SUP boards and they got to experience short river trips, learn about paddle fitness and they learned about water safety knowledge and skills as well as “Leave No Trace” principles. All participants received a Paddle Pass Certificate provided on completion of the course and they have an opportunity to progress & join Kilkenny Aqua Canoe Club.
